Theatre costumes are often the first theatrical need that comes to mind when organizing a production. For the audience to truly believe in a character, they must look the part. Some costumes are simple, because the character is just an average, everyday person. However, sometimes the costume must be very elaborate to make the character believable, such as in performances where actors portray characters from a particular period in time.
For some theatre-goers, theatrical costumes are the most interesting part of the production. They show what care and detail has gone into the performance for the sake of the audience's imagination. Some costumes are so dazzling that the gasp of awe can be unmistakably heard throughout the theatre when the performer takes the stage.
